CMD welcomes Katłįà (Catherine) Lafferty
Katłįà (Catherine) Lafferty is a northern Dene/Cree/Metis writer. Her memoir NORTHERN WILDFLOWER is used as a teaching tool in Indigenous literary studies across Turtle Island and her novel LAND-WATER-SKY/Ndè-Tı-Yat'a was nominated for a 2021 Indigenous Voices Award.
Katłįà’s freelance work has been published nationally and internationally in the Toronto Star, National Geographic, CBC North, Briarpatch, the National Theatre of Canada, Council New Chapter, Grain Magazine, Reasons to Be Cheerful, Indiginews, The Narwhal and The Tyee.
Katłįà’s northern homeland and matrilineal lineage informs her storytelling. Much of her work is dedicated to informing readers on the importance of place-based teachings, caring for the land and water, and advocating on issues that impact Indigenous peoples. Recently Katłįà has been appointed as the inaugural climate writer in residence at the West Vancouver Memorial Library.
Katłįà is working on a nonfiction project that examines Indigenous knowledge systems and the climate crisis. From battling the impacts of environmental racism in communities across Turtle Island, to being on the front lines of current and historical protests, to examples of community solutions that incorporate green energy alternatives, Katłįà will seek insight from Indigenous knowledge keepers, Elders and prophetic storytellers to help explain how humanity can return to a state of reciprocity with nature in order to prevent further destruction of the land and water.
Katłįà is represented by Stephanie Sinclair.
