A documentary filmmaker, producer, and writer from Kabul, Afghanistan. Aram’s short story THIS HARD EASY LIFE was a finalist for RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers in 2020.

Jamaluddin Aram is a documentary filmmaker, producer, and writer from Kabul, Afghanistan. His works have appeared in Numero Cinq, The Write Launch, and Cagibi literary magazine among others. Aram’s short story THIS HARD EASY LIFE was a finalist for RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers in 2020. He was selected as a mentee by Michael Christie for the Writers’ Trust of Canada mentorship program for his book MARCHOBA. He is the associate producer of the Academy Award-nominated film Buzkashi Boys. Aram has a bachelor’s degree in English and history from Union College in Schenectady, New York. He lives in Toronto.

His debut novel, MARCHOBA, is set in Kabul, Afghanistan in the early 90s. As the armed conflict continues in the background, life roars on in full force in the narrow alleys of Wazirabad where a bonesetter reads poetry to his cat; an old woman with poor eyesight wants to find her married son a second wife to have a grandchild before going blind; a teenage boy dons a gold-button jacket to seduce a widow woman; and every day at noon, a flaming red rooster walks three blocks to visit his favorite hens. MARCHOBA is a book about peace in the time of war.
